The Chiefs Won the Bye Week—Now the 0-5 Chargers Are a Different Kind of Test

Kansas City did not play in Week 5, yet its position in the AFC West improved anyway.

Denver beat the Los Angeles Chargers 23-17, while Las Vegas was blown out 45-17 by New England. The official NFL game center now shows the Chiefs at 4-0, Denver and Las Vegas at 3-2, and the Chargers at 0-5. NFL.com

That sounds like the perfect bye week.

It also creates a trap if Kansas City starts treating next Sunday’s opponent like a team whose record has already decided the game.

The Standings Broke Kansas City’s Way

The math is straightforward. The Chiefs left Week 4 at 4-0 and came out of their bye still unbeaten, but now with Denver and Las Vegas both carrying a second loss. Kansas City sits 1.5 games ahead of each in the division despite having played one fewer game. NFL.com

Las Vegas’ loss was especially damaging.

The Raiders entered Week 5 at 3-1 after pushing Kansas City to the final possession one week earlier, then surrendered 536 yards in a 45-17 loss to New England. The Raiders’ own recap described a performance in which many of the strengths from their first four games disappeared. Las Vegas Raiders

Denver helped itself by getting to 3-2, but the result also pushed the Chargers to 0-5 just before their trip to Arrowhead.

From a standings perspective, Kansas City could not have scripted the weekend much better.

But 0-5 Does Not Mean Harmless

The Chargers’ record is terrible.

Their Week 5 performance was not.

Los Angeles led Denver 17-10 entering the fourth quarter. The game flipped when the Chargers failed on fourth down, then Justin Herbert lost a fumble with the score tied and threw an interception on the next possession. Denver turned those mistakes into the points that produced a 23-17 comeback win. Los Angeles Chargers

That matters because Kansas City is not preparing for a team that has stopped competing.

It is preparing for one that just showed it can control stretches of a divisional game and then ruin its own work in high-leverage moments.

The Chiefs should want to make those moments arrive earlier.

If Kansas City starts fast, protects the football and forces Los Angeles to chase the game, every failed fourth down, sack or turnover becomes heavier for a team already carrying five losses.

If the Chiefs let the Chargers hang around into the fourth quarter, the psychological burden shifts the other way: the winless team has nothing to protect and everything to steal.

Andy Reid’s Post-Bye History Is an Advantage, Not a Guarantee

Kansas City also has a coaching trend working in its favor.

Andy Reid is 22-5 in regular-season games following a bye, including 9-4 with Kansas City and 6-2 with Patrick Mahomes as his starting quarterback. Yahoo Sports

That record is impressive enough to reflect more than a random streak.

But the useful lesson is not that Kansas City automatically wins after a bye.

It is that the extra preparation time should show up in specific ways: cleaner situational football, better answers for what opponents exposed during September and a plan that accounts for personnel changes—especially at wide receiver.

The Chargers will be desperate.

Kansas City should be more prepared.

This Is a Leverage Game for the Division

Week 6 is not a must-win game for a 4-0 team.

It is still unusually valuable.

Kansas City’s official schedule confirms the Chiefs host Los Angeles on October 18 before traveling to Seattle and Denver in the following two weeks. Kansas City Chiefs

A Chiefs victory would make Kansas City 5-0 and give it another AFC West win while dropping Los Angeles to 0-6.

That would not mathematically eliminate the Chargers, but it would put them in an extraordinary hole while Kansas City strengthens its control of the division.

A loss would do the opposite.

It would hand life to a desperate rival and waste part of the advantage the Chiefs received while resting.

That is why the correct mindset is not:

“The Chargers are 0-5, so this should be easy.”

It is:

“The Chargers are 0-5, so do not give them a reason to believe.”

The Counterargument: 0-5 Teams Are Usually 0-5 for a Reason

There is a fair argument that caution can become overthinking.

Los Angeles has lost five straight games. Against Denver, the Chargers committed exactly the kinds of late turnovers and situational mistakes that losing teams tend to make. Kansas City is unbeaten, rested and playing at home. Los Angeles Chargers

The Chiefs should be favored for good reasons.

But respecting an opponent is not the same as fearing one.

The professional response to a struggling divisional rival is to attack the weakness that keeps showing up.

In Los Angeles’ case, that weakness is not an inability to compete for three quarters.

It is an inability to finish cleanly.

My Take

The Chiefs won the bye week without taking a snap.

Denver and Las Vegas now both have two losses. The Chargers are winless. Kansas City is alone at the top of the AFC West and still has a game in hand.

Now the Chiefs need to cash in that advantage.

The smartest Week 6 approach is to ignore the Chargers’ record and attack the reason behind it.

Start fast.

Stay out of turnover trouble.

Force Los Angeles into the late-game decision pressure that just beat it against Denver.

If Kansas City does that, the bye will have produced more than rest.

It will have produced separation.
